1,000 monks at Poetica

POETICA HOME

I first saw Santa Rosa artist Andrea Speer Hibbard's wonderful giclee print on my birthday a few years back.  I was driving through the tiny town of Occidental and came upon it in an art gallery.  It drew me over and I appreciated it immensely.  I was deeply touched by the drawing of hundreds of monks dressed in saffron robes.    In April 2013,  a woman walks into Poetica looking for the right place to sell her art.   It turns out to be the artist of '1,000 monks.'

Poetica is joyfully carrying this beloved print.    It has become the most often gifted piece of art in the shop - birthday's, anniversaries, thank you's, I love you's -  any occasion.

The signed giclee print is $85 and the beautifully framed version is $330.

From The Avant Gardist LOCAL JEWELER, GLOBAL STORY

FLK Statement Necklace

FLK Statement Necklace

Our accessories can tell a more powerful story than our clothes. Bay Area jeweler Francesca Kennedy has been telling stories for the past 8 years with hardware, brass, and leather. Her materials are sourced from all over the world. Whether it’s beads that her cousin brought her from Beijing or a pendant made of ancient Roman glass, when Francesca explains the significance behind each piece in her collection, they suddenly become so much more than an accessory.

While chatting at a trunk show recently, Francesca admitted that even though she loves clothing, most of her closet is quite basic. She prefers to let her jewels take center stage. At the time, she was wearing a simple knit sweater with two long beaded necklaces. Instead of utilizing the hook and eye closures to secure the necklaces, she had tied them together in a loose knot. This creative twist demonstrated two of the best qualities about Francesca’s line. First, her pieces beg to be layered, and second, she takes great care with the details so even the hardware can shine.

FLK Brass Necklace

FLK Brass Necklace

The outstanding thing about Francesca is that she can tell a story about every element of her collection– from the way brass can be worn polished or tarnished, to the fact that anklets used to be worn primarily by the “bad” girls of her youth. When you put on one of Francesca’s pieces, you can feel the weight of the story behind it.

It’s this relationship between wearer and jewel that Francesca finds most fascinating. Even after the jewelry is created, she feels it is never really “finished.” The wearer ultimately adds her own layer of story once she puts the piece on.

Francesca’s work can be found in San Francisco at Poetica on Sacramento Street and at Limu on Fillmore Street. You can also find her on Facebook at Francesca Kennedy Designs.

the Poetica salon

POETICA HOME

I'm celebrating my birthday today and thought what better time to start a new tradition.  The theme is Salon - a fanciful idea that is ages old.   It is a gesture meant to facilitate meaningful, honest and  engaging conversation amongst a group of people and it was made especially popular by Proust.  The questions below are directly from or inspired by the Proust Salon book.

I'll ask the questions and if you feel Brave, Curious and Insightful please Respond.

Salon Questions:

What is your idea of happiness?

What is your present state of mind?

What is your favorite motto?

If not yourself who would you choose to be?

What do you most like about San Francisco?

If you could bottle up any aspect of San Francisco & share it with someone far away what would it be?

If you want to send them privately to me that 's ok too.  Traciteraoka@mac.com

Bonus:  Send a quirky photo of yourself too- -- not a requirement but I would Love It!.

antiques and art: from the very old to the relatively new

POETICA HOME

Yes, I love antiques and yes, I love art ... I also really enjoy more than just one type or period of furniture.  Perhaps that's where Poetica is more than it appears.   The little vignette above is a nice example.   Two vintage wall paper rollers converted into lamps flank a William Switzler mahogany French regency-style desk with embossed leather top.  A turn of the century antique biscuit container holds a bouquet of daffodils on the left.  A 1940's Royal typewriter  (with brand new ribbon) and vintage Japanese lacquered boxes sit on the right.  The middle of this vignette features S.F. artist Becca Smidt's  hand pressed lenticulars. And finally above on the wall there are two beautiful Spanish midcentury flower mirrors. All very handsome and each piece has its own integrity and design value.   I like how they seamlessly work together too.

ReInvent 2013

POETICA HOME

I needed a spiritual Sunday to kick off my new year.

I chose to spend it at the amazing East Bay Church of Religious Science in Oakland.  Rev. E  filled the room with her positive, authentic and funny ministry invoking the wise words of Marianne Williamson, Louise Hayes and Alice Walker along the way - it was inspiring and it came with a couple of things to practice in our daily lives.  Here's number one:

Set your intention and be accountable to it.   Rather than start the year with false promises to ourselves and others let us set a singular focus on improving our lives and those around us.  And "if you want change stop complaining about the turbulance."

I want a sustainable business and a more balanced home life.  There is a list of things I need to do to make it happen 'my way' and of course the countless things that will knock me off my base as I reach for it.   I'll share with you how it goes and hope you share your stories as well.
